500KM. Time for a True Impression.

This is the brand new Scion FR-S. Internationally known as the Toyota GT86 and twin to the Subaru BRZ.

Since I was young, I've always loved cars. I grew up admiring and reading about all types of vehicles, but the one that hits closest to home are lightweight Japanese sports cars. It seems that as I was getting deeper into understanding these cars, they had slowly transformed into a dying breed. The dream of buying an affordable, light weight, small engine, rear wheel drive
sports car was disappearing.

Reaching the age of purchasing one of these vehicles, my options have dwindled to either purchasing one of these famed vehicles in conditions similar to a clunker, or buying one of the new "sports cars" on the market. But I decided not to buy into that. In my opinion, what is on the market now isn't what these legends wanted as successors. These new cars are built on platforms of family cars. They start off with an economic family car, dump a bigger or turbocharged engine into the bay, add some sporty seats, red stitching, nice wheels and convince us, the true fans of the dream, that these are the new "sports cars." But they're not. Don't get me wrong, those cars are great. But they weren't for me. I'm a purist.

The sitting position. The perception of the road. The suspension. The feeling of everything around you developed for one sole purpose: for you. The driver. The feelings you receive from today's "affordable sports cars" will never mimic a vehicle who's purpose from the ground up was designed for your driving pleasure, and your driving pleasure alone. To eliminate all factors that would cut into this sensation to achieve a final frontier: a pure sports car that is affordable.

This car is phenomenal, a game changer. Although this vehicle is an end product, it isn't the end. It's just the beginning. The beginning of a generation of cars that proves the dream isn't dead. This car embodies the idea that the dream is still real and when that dream becomes reality, people will pursue it. It demonstrates to car manufacturers that if they produce a fun, light weight, real wheel drive vehicle, they won't pile up on the dealership lot. It's because the dream is never dead, and the new FR-S is proof of that.

As I'm writing this, currently there are only a handful of FR-S and BRZ's in the city. But I can promise you. I can absolutely promise you, that there will be much more on the road in the following months. Because there are several people out there, who have craved for that same dream. To be behind the wheel of a car that one day may be rare. That already, in my opinion, has a legendary status. I can only hope that there will be much more on the road and that drivers everywhere will experience the dream for themselves.

"I can only hope enough that this car sells well, and that we will see tens of thousands, even hundreds of thousands of them on the streets. And that they will live long and happy lives shredding rubber and putting smiles on faces of everyone for generations to come."

But this single one is special. This one is White. This one is a 6 Speed. This is one of the first.
And this one is mine.

Also...another package!
A 1/24 scale of the FR-S I'm picking up tomorrow. Perfect timing. I can build a model of my car while I am under the ownership of it. Guess I won't need to search on-line so hard for reference pictures? I'll just go straight to the garage. yeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaa boooooooy.

300KM's. Weekend Blur.

I have driven 300KM's in 2 days. All City. That already says a lot about the car.
The weekend has been a blur. It seems all my energy this weekend has been sent directly to it. Either driving it, looking at it, talking about it, or admiring it a few friends.

I've taken several people for drives, turned several heads. Seen a few thumbs up and even encouraging comments/looks at intersections. It's mind blowing to be the person who use to point at special cars on the road to being straight in the driver seat of something special.

This car is Legendary. I feel entirely disconnected to it. When people admire it, or say something about it. It's totally separate from me. I feel often times, people judge a person on their car or judge the car based on the person. But in this vehicle, it is 100% disconnected. People appreciate the car, as it is. And that makes me extremely happy.

I don't want people to say "___ just got the FR-S." or "I heard he picked up an FR-S." I want people to say, "Wow, that's the new FR-S." or "I didn't even know those were out already."
The vehicle is so special to me, and in my mind, it's status is already legendary. I feel that people will look back at this car one day and it will have been seen as one of the greats. I just want the car to be seen, appreciated and loved by all car people who can cut all ties and look at a vehicle purely in it's own right.
I want it to evoke the feelings that I get over the years when I saw something nice drive by, or a low rumble pulling up beside me.

I'm completely exhausted. My nerves and energy levels have become completely numb from all the sensations, excitement and driving pleasure provided by my new FR-S. But when I look in the garage, it sits there with razor sharp edges. The car looks extremely fast, even when it's sitting still. It sizzles with energy and doesn't exhibit a hint of exhaustion or fatigue. It has no idea how agile and beautiful it looks.

PICK UP DAY. How many new car pick up days are you going to have in your life?

Today's the big day.

Made my appointment for pick up at 9:00 AM.
When I got there, the car was rolling into the parking spot and immediately I knew that one was mine.

After paying, running through the procedures and doing the walk-around/intro I was finally behind the wheel.
As promised to Miss Wong, She was my first passenger on my very first drive. I turned it out of Mayfield and took it on Anthony Henday right away. It blitzed up to the speed limit in no time and I just got lost in the sensation.

We very quickly passed the turn I was suppose to take, so got lost driving around in the West side for a bit. Found my way back to Toyota pretty quickly and drove to get it registered (oops).

When I got home, I decided I would park her in the garage for a bit. Go out and take a bit of time to let it sink in. I feared that being behind the wheel, and not 100% believing I truly owned the car would result in some anxiety and bad shifts. I put her in safe and sound, but I can tell you that she won't be in there very long, as I write this.

Love at first sight? How bout HYPE at first sight.

So yesterday morning after that entry booked it over to Mayfield as fast as I could.
Saw a few other white ones ready for pick up. Looks like Mayfield's second full shipment was only 4 white FR-S's, but I think I'm picking mine up first. That'll make it the second white one on the street sold in Edmonton (assuming that Sherwood Park isn't Edmonton).

Went there and the first 3 I saw didn't match the VIN's. Finally saw her parked as far deep in as they could, right under the Gazebo. No rain, no sunlight, no risks of other cars hitting it. Perfect spot thanks to Mr. I.

Car was still wrapped up.
If I could choose, I would have the car picked up in this condition.

There as a certain individual. A Mr. Chow, who is an expert on curves. But not what you think, he's an expert detailer who I've commissioned to entrust the FR-S's first clean up under. If there is anyone who you can trust, it's Mr. Chow because he knows his shit. You can read some of his past write up's here:

FR-S Arrival

Last week I received some great news. After a lot of ETA's and hearing other people's horror stories relating to wait times on the FR-S, I was issued a VIN. Some people had put a deposit down in June and are expecting the car at the end of July or August. Some regions are expecting October for their vehicles if that dealership is in high demand. I feel extremely fortunate and after surfing the boards on ft86club, I'm glad mine is guaranteed.

I knew for sure the car was on the way. Whether it was on a ship, at port, or on the rails no one knew. I had a big window it would arrive. They said sometime between June 29th to July 11.

But today, the ultimate surprise. Mr. I called me and said that my car arrived. I couldn't believe it.

My FR-S is on lot. Second White in Edmonton, and 8th FR-S in town.

It's been so long. So many years of speculation in the car community, and so many years of development on Toyota & Subaru's part to revive the dream. I've waited years for this car to come out. I've hyped every single friend or car person I've talked to. I test drove it and it lived up to the hype.

It's time to put my money where my mouth is. This car is the real deal.

The Dream isn't Dead.

Today was a pretty special day for me. I had a slot for 1:00 pm to test drive the new Scion FR-S (sister of the BRZ and internationally known as the Toyota 86/Toyota GT86) at Mayfield Toyota in Edmonton.

The car would only be available for 5 hours for demo's and test drives and all of them were pre-booked. It's the first time anyone in the city will have seen the car in flesh. The Edmonton Autoshow had a BRZ on display, but was on a pedestal and locked out.

The one they provided was perfect. It was in Whiteout (Satin White Pearl in Japan for the 86) and a 6 speed transmission. If I were to buy one, that would be the one.

For ages, it seemed the dream was dead. That no manufacturer could make a light weight, rear wheel, small displacement vehicle that would put a smile on your face around every corner, through every bend and in every straight. I grew up admiring all these legendary vehicles, but sadly I was born a decade too late and when I was of age to purchase these cars, many of them had already become clunkers. Since then, most automotive manufacturers have shifted gears and started producing cars with more convenience, better fuel economy and in the end, everyday, liveable, boring cars. But not any more. This car symbolizes the beginning. Although this car is an end product, it's just the beginning of the re imagining of this dream. This car is proof, that the dream isn't dead. It's still out there and after the successful launch of this vehicle, hopefully other manufacturers will follow suit. They will realize what they have been missing all these years and come to their senses.

I met up with my dealership friend and we were waiting for the car to arrive. Looking through the glass of the dealership I saw it come by into the lot. It's remarkable. The pictures show the car having quite a bit of wheel gap and sitting pretty high, especially when its tossing around in corners and accelerating. However, seeing it in the flesh the car sits extremely low, looks extremely wide and I'm thoroughly impressed with the road presence it provided. The curves and angles of the car are indescribable. It looks like nothing in a Sub 30k price range. It's honestly one of the prettiest cars I have witnessed and in my opinion looks much more agile, graceful than any car up to a 50k range. STi's, Evo's, Genesis, RX-8, 370z. The FR-S of course cannot be compared to these cars in terms of performance, but for looks, I feel the FR-S takes the cake.

I was up next and the rules were that you only got 15 minutes with the vehicle.

After I got behind the wheel and starting my route, it's indescribable. The car sit's so low and you feel so connected to the road. The pavement feels like it's flying by right under your ass by inches. The steering is ultra responsive and there was no lack in power. The torque band felt super flat and we constantly kept speeding up.

My friend took the car out after and with Him, the extra tall sales person and myself, the car still went up to 160-170km/hr without any hesitation. It felt like the tip of the iceberg at those speeds.

After getting out of the car, I knew that was the vehicle I'd eventually purchase. It could be in days, weeks, months, half a year or a whole year. But this would be the car I would eventually purchase. No other company had anything remotely close in the works.

If I'm getting it eventually, I might as well get it now, right? I put a deposit down and now we play the waiting game.
